Currently in the market, not all rods come with hook keepers. When anglers purchase after market hook keepers, they will usually mount it right in front of the front grip on the rod blank.
I don't really favor such a mounting method. When we retract the hook keeper, the hook keeper's base is rubbing against my rod.
I mount mine on the stem of my reel instead. It doesn't get in the way, it doesn't rub against my rod, securing my squid jigs / egi is easy too. When I change rod using the same reel, I still have my hook keeper with my reel. Therefore cutting down the inconvinience.
